Lean Into Your Strengths
Consider this idea. You already hold within you the superpower which is going to provide the fuel for your success.
âThe superheroes you have in mind (idols, icons, titans, billionaire, etc.) are nearly all walking flaws whoâve maximised one or two strengths. Humans are imperfect creatures. You donât succeed because you have no weaknesses; you succeed because you find your unique strengths and focus on developing habits around them.â Tim Ferriss.
Your superpower is the strengths and abilities you already possess that make you feel most alive and excited.
âSocietyâs relentless focus on peopleâs shortcomings has turned into a global obsession. Whatâs more, we have discovered that people have several times more potential for growth when they invest energy in developing their strengths instead of correcting their deficiencies.â Tom Rath
Letâs focus on that last sentence.
What would happen if you focused on what you did best in life, instead of constantly adding to the list of skills and techniques you felt you had to learn before you could become a success in your niche?
Every single one of us has a combination of unique abilities.
We all have things that we do well, and things that we do not do so well.
That is completely normal.
The challenge is that, for most of our lives, we have been taught that we have to find ways to make up for our shortcomings. So we study to pass mathematics or English examinations at school, for example, when actually we are naturally athletic and love to study science and human biology.
The media presentation of a hero or icon is someone who has spent thousands of hours learning a new skill so they can succeed in a particular sport or business. Overcoming weaknesses, lack of natural ability or challenges is seen as something to be applauded and celebrated.
We have all heard the expression â âYou can be anything you want to be, if you just try hard enoughâ.
Is that actually true? Or the guaranteed way to make any child, or adult, feel totally inadequate?
When you were at school, did your parents and teachers praise you for your amazing great grades in the subjects which you naturally enjoyed and did well in, or shake their heads at the lowest grades and demand that you work harder and focus on those weak areas so that the grades would improve?
The truth is the exact opposite.
For the majority of people, the key to their success will be to develop, practise and work hard on those innate skills and talents that they already possess, when they feel invigorated and engaged and excited about what they are doing.
Focusing on your natural authentic talents, means your work will be aligned to your true potential and you will achieve much greater returns for your hard work and practice. You will be building on your strengths which in turn will become your most powerful assets.
